During the holiday season and throughout the winter, help yourself thrive by taking a page from the Danish culture and practice “hygge” (pronounced who-ga).
The Scandinavians have a reputation for being the happiest group of people on the planet despite the long cold winters and short summers.
Their happiness is not a result of micro-dosing Vitamin D, ample amounts of anti-depressants, packages for the tanning salon or even long vacations abroad at the beach for natural light therapy.
This happiness is brought about by a way of life, one key element being hygge (once again – “who-ga”).
Hygge, simply put, means coziness.
Making it a point to embrace small pleasures and comforts that are characteristic of wintertime, such as sitting next to the fireplace, sipping hot tea or cocoa, wearing cozy pajamas, thick fuzzy socks or slippers, and curling up under piles of blankets, can help with having a better mood.
This year, during the holidays, take time to light some candles and enjoy the uplifting music, traditional movies, festive lights and decorations as well as the savory and sweet treats of the season.
Set an intention to truly enjoy togetherness while celebrating with friends and family.
If winter isn’t your jam, instead of resisting, try to radically accept it. Ease into the contentment of these shorter days with the positive aspects that they bring. Slowing down, resting more, and not feeling any pressure to be outside or get things done in the yard are a few examples.
Give yourself permission to snuggle up guilt-free this winter.
What do you have to lose?
Besides perhaps your annual bout of winter blues?
